For the new Galaxy S9 series, Samsung has added a security feature called Smart Scan, which basically combines iris recognition and face scanning when you unlock any phone. However, this model does not exactly fit its name and is annoying. First, if you wear sunglasses, the phone won't unlock. Unfortunately, the phone doesn't have a wake-up gesture, which means you have to press the power button or the virtual home button to wake up the screen.
During our review period, there were times when it worked fast, but more often we found it to be slow and very inconsistent. Although Samsung says both iris and facial biometrics are used in this mode, it doesn't require data from two scans to work. In some cases, even if we close our eyes, the phone will automatically unlock, which indicates that when the user's iris is not scanned, the phone can only restore face recognition. This gives us some doubts about its practicability. In contrast, face recognition alone is not enough.
